Responding to the COVID Pandemic.

During this Pandemic, Women in Unity embarked on “Operation Engage”. The Lockdown meant the majority of our beneficiaries were struck much harder and to compound to the problem more people as a result of the Pandemic and lockdown, crossed over to the vulnerability list.

Operation Engage meant devising means possible to reach out to as many people affected as possible which also meant working with all other groups and charities within the communities to deliver help to these people.

Given the nature of the playing field given the restrictions on movement, we had to work with the means available to us.

Our Application for grant from The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports in partnership with The Community Lottery Fund was successful. This funding went a long way in helping WIU deliver its services and touch many lives. We would like to say “a big and massive thank you”!, on behalf of our members and beneficiaries

Our Response

Delivering hot meals

A number of our beneficiaries could not make or have access to a hot meal during the isolation.

Our staff and volunteers offered to prepare home made meals which were delivered to the vulnerable every day of the week.

With a rich menu catering for different tastes and cuisines, we ensured those in receipt of these meals felt at home whilst enjoying their favourite.

The favourite list on the menu included,

  1. Roast Chicken,

  2. Mac and Cheese

  3. Sweet Potatoes and Malakwang (Bitter Sweet Ugandan Greens)

  4. Beef Stew

  5. Roast/grilled Fish and Stew

  6. Posho

  7. Chapatti and Mandazi

  8. Binyewa ( fine Ground groundnuts)

  9. Matooke and Beans

Keep Warm Vouchers

One of the biggest challenges most people and especially the vulnerable faced during the Lockdown was keeping warm, or the inability to warm the house.

As a priority we decided to give electricity and Gas voucher tokens to the most affected. Going by the feedback we received, the little we could do with keeping our people warm went a long way.

“Words can not express our gratitude. My mum just wanted you to know she’s is extremely pleased with what you have done for her. Its like a guardian Angel, you knew she was running low on food and no money to top up her utilities. May thanks to you and team for what you are doing. Only God can repay you.”

Delivering Grocery Basket

We endeavoured to run by the grocery stores to pick a few basic items which we delivered directly to those in need.

Compared to pre-Lockdown, the number of people in need of these deliveries were overwhelming, but thanks to our donors, we were able to reach as many as we could.

Looking After the Grieving

Providing Emotional and spiritual support to those who have lost their loved ones.

Losing a loved one is a devastating experience. During this Pandemic, we have had individuals who lost several loved ones within a space of a few weeks of month. This traumatic experience exposes someone to a place where words can not console their grieving heart.

As Women in Unity, we made our selves available to attend to these people in the best way we could.

We offered spiritual and small financial support where we could.

Can you be that shoulder to lean on?

Our work requires ones time and commitment to give that time as a service. All Active and volunteers give their time and resources in form of transport, buying food to cook for delivery, buying hampers for the sick etc. The strength of WIU is found in this which has kept the organisation going regardless of the circumstances.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport

The operational grant we received from The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in partnership with the community Lottery went a long way in enabling us deliver to many during this Pandemic. Without this grant, we wouldn’t have been able reach out and help our beneficiaries during the most difficult periods and needs

The National Lottery

Together with The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the Community Lottery Fund took care of most needed activities, in Equipment in form of Laptops, Vouchers and groceries.

To Reach out to as many beneficiaries, we had to work together with other community organisations and charities, LCF serves one of the communities served by WIU and therefore, this gave us an opportunity to care for the other members from other communities.

Its time to make a difference, join Women in Unity as a volunteer or support our activities with any donations you can,

Sister Betty and Team at Women In Unity, your love, compassion and relentless need to serve has shone a new light in my life during this Pandemic. Without the food you have delivered to us through and through, we would have gone hungry. Keeping doing what you are doing. My husband and I will forever be indebted to you. May God bless you

“Women in Unity are very active in the community, serving in diverse ways.

When my husband was diagnosed with a devastating nerve condition that left him needing life support, Sister Betty & her team routinely visited us at home, where hospice care was provided.

My husband needed help with everything, including keeping his airways clear, leaving me no time for many household chores.

The support Women in Unity gave during my husband’s illness and also after he passed was invaluable.

The nature of my husband's illness meant that we could not go out leaving us very isolated, the visits from women in Unity were a lifeline for my family..”
